Who is Kyla Scanlon?

Short answer: Kyla Scanlon is an American entrepreneur, writer, researcher, commentator, and financial educator.[1] Scanlon is the founder of Bread, a financial education platform.[2] She is best known for coining the term “vibecession” and sharing financial content on social handles including Instagram, Substack, YouTube, and TikTok to educate the audience from a philosophical perspective.[3] She also runs a podcast, Let's Appreciate.[4]

Early life and education[edit]

Scanlon grew up in Kentucky with a passion for writing. She started writing in the third grade with her first book called "The Little Penguin."[5] As a teenager, Scanlon started trading stocks, which helped her in learning advanced finance aspects. She graduated from Western Kentucky University with a BA and triple majors in data analytics, economics, and market finance. Scanlon has served in various positions during her time at the university, including Founder and President of WKU Women in Business, student ambassador, and has represented several committees.[6]

After completing her graduation, Scanlon joined Capital Group as an Associate, where she worked in the areas of communications, investment strategy, macroeconomics, and research. Thereafter, she joined On Deck as an Investment Partner and often envisioned herself as an Economics Professor later in life.[7]

After the pandemic intervened and Kyla out of boredom started making TikTok videos. After creating a few videos, she realized that this is something she wanted to do and found her niche. Scanlon had an academic background which helped her to create quality content on the latest market trends, economics, currency and equity. She published content across various social platforms like Instagram, TikTok, Youtube, Substack, and Spotify.[8]

After finding early success, Scanlon started focusing content on financial brands like Bankless and FTX, which gained attention a lot of users. She also launched her own financial education platform called Bread in 2021. Scanlon also runs her own podcast called "Let's Appreciate," where she offers financial advice and market trend analysis. She is passionate about educational equality, data science, and quantitative finance.[9]

Scanlon creates videos explaining complex financial institutions with easy-to-understand lingo and visuals.[10] She has been featured in the New York Times, Bloomberg, and Yahoo Finance, to name a few. Scanlon is also known for introducing the term "vibecession," which garnered mixed reactions from her TikTok followers and financial pundits.[11]
