Early life and education[edit]

Brad was born in Indiana to Thomas Gerstner and Martha Burt. He attended Wabash College, where he was a Lilly Scholar and earned his Bachelor’s in Economics and Political Science. While there, Brad also studied politics, philosophy, and economics overseas at the University of Oxford from 1991 to 1992.

Brad was a Jump scholar at Indiana University at Bloomington School of Law from 1993 to 1996. After earning his JD, he had a brief legal career and a job in public service. Thereafter, Brad earned his MBA from Harvard in 2000.[8]

Brad began his entrepreneurial journey in 1986, even before going to college.[9] His first startup was Wawasee Boat Care, where he worked as a boat washer at Lake Wawasee, which didn’t earn him big bucks but taught him important lessons in business.[10] It was in the middle of his law school and Harvard, that Brad worked as an associate lawyer for a firm in Indianapolis.[11] Thereafter, he served as the Deputy Secretary of the State of Indiana from 1998 to 1999.[12]

Straight out of Harvard, Gerstner served as the Co-CEO of the National Leisure Group, which was later sold to IAC in 2001.[13] He then co-founded Openlist.com, which was sold to Marchex in 2006.[14] In 2008, Brad founded Altimeter Capital,[15] a technology investment firm that has $18 billion in assets under management as of April 2022. In 2010, Brad founded Room 77, a travel arrangement firm, and later sold its technology to Google after running it successfully for four years.[16][17]

Brad is also the founder of The Board Challenge, a movement that aims to accelerate the rate of diversity on corporate boards.[18][19]

Brad is known for his internet-related travel investments, including Booking.com, Uber, Airbnb, and Expedia.[20] His past investments include Airbyte, Discord, Benchling, Cerebras, Chainalysis, Checkout, OpenSea, Hopin, and Plaid, among others.[21] Brad also led a Series C investment into Snowflake, which went public in 2020.[22] So far, he has participated in 100 IPOs as an anchor, sponsor, or investor.[23]

Brad’s family foundation, Give Forward, supports low-income schools in East Palo Alto as well as poverty relief measures in the Bay Area.[24][25]

Personal life[edit]

Brad married Michelle Boyers on September 29, 2007, whom he met at Harvard while pursuing his MBA.[26] The couple is blessed with two kids, Lincoln (12) and Jack (10).[27]
