What is the capital of Switzerland?
Main topic: Humanities
Other topics: Switzerland
Short answer:
- Switzerland has no de jure capital
- For practical purposes, Bern is considered its capital, or federal city
Switzerland's laws make no explicit mention of a capital, only a "federal city". Swiss laws only mention that " the Federal Assembly meets in Bern" and that "the official seat of the Federal Council, the departments and the Federal Chancellery is the City of Bern".[1][2]
Which leads to the questions: What is a capital, really? What effect is there if the capital of a province or nation is moved to a different city? What examples are there of attempts to move capitals that wholly or partly failed?
